A Unite official alongside convenor Kevin Nolan have flown to New York for a meeting today with Visteon management. The fight at the occupied factory is nearly a week old and as things stand the sacked workers are in a strong position.
The judge declined to imprison the convenor or deputy convenor at the court case on Monday but an enforcement notice will be served at the plant tomorrow (Thursday) 12 noon. It is not clear whether the negotiations in New York are connected with the enforcement deadline.
Whatever the case, the decison to support the union idea of leaving the plant before the result of negotiations is known is crazy.
Arguments are going on all the time among the workers, with many willing to go back on the decision to leave, unless negotiations bear fruit. There are some sharp discussions ongoing about the law and the police. If any of them thought coppers are there to help old ladies across the road the Ian Tomlinson case should set people thinking.
Workers continue to be overwhelmed by the support they are receiving. Commenting on a donation of food from Kurdish/Turkish socialist group Day Mer one worker asked: "Why are they giving us all their food?".
The plant is now on a heavy lock down as quite rightly they don't want any agent provocateurs wandering around.
Anyone who can needs to get down to the factory before 12 noon tomorrow when the heavy hand of the state may try to make a move. They'll have a hell of a job trying to get in though.
