Qatari-donated construction material to enter Gaza

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Egypt authorized the first batch of Qatari-donated construction materials to enter the Gaza Strip via their shared border on Saturday, an official said.

The official in the Qatari committee for reconstruction of Gaza said the delivery would take place later in the day.

Qatar announced in September it was contributing $400 million earlier to reconstruct the war-torn Gaza Strip.

Equipment and material needed for construction work in Gaza had been held up by Israel's blockade of Gaza, tightened in 2007 when Hamas took power.

Palestinian officials said Israel was relaxing controls on construction material as part of a truce deal with the Hamas government that ended eight days of fighting in November. more

Gaza man killed in Syria was 'Qassam commander'

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man who was killed in Syria on Friday was a senior figure in Hamas' armed wing, rebels and Hamas officials said Saturday.

Muhammad Qunneita, 31, from Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, had been in Syria for four months, his brother told Ma'an.

Rebels told Reuters on Saturday Qunneita was killed in fighting around Aleppo airport where he had been helping to train Arab and Muslim fighters. Activists in Syria also said he had been a prominent figure in Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades. more
