Egypt military seizes 'Gaza-linked weapons' in Sinai

CAIRO (AFP) -- Egypt's military says it has seized caches of weapons in a Sinai operation including a mortar apparently belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group in neighboring Gaza.

The military has launched a sweeping offensive in the north of the peninsula to quell an Islamist militant insurgency that surged after the army deposed president Mohamed Morsi in July.

In a picture of seized weapons posted on its spokesman's Facebook page on Sunday, three soldiers stood next to captured machine-guns and mortars.

One mortar had a scale used for aiming with the caption "Saraya Al Quds."

That is the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, which had previously defied the ruling Hamas movement by firing rockets at Israel when Hamas wanted a truce. more

Palestinian patient detained at Erez terminal on way to hospital

Sunday evening [September 8, 2013] Israeli soldiers kidnapped a young Palestinian man at the Erez Terminal, between Gaza and Israel, as he was on his way to receive treatment at an Israeli hospital.

Palestinian sources said that Mohammad Al-Bakry, 25, from the Ash-Shaty’s refugee camp, is suffering from a serious illness that rendered him disabled, and was heading to an Israeli hospital after receiving all needed permits, and referrals.

Israel frequently kidnaps Palestinian patients heading to Israeli hospitals, and in many cases, the army asks them to become collaborators with the occupation in exchange for granting them medical treatment. more

Settlers uproot over 40 olive trees in south Hebron hills

HEBRON (Ma'an) -- A group of settlers uprooted over 40 olive trees in the south Hebron hills late Sunday, a local official said.

Ratib al-Jabour, coordinator of the popular committee against the wall and settlements, said that settlers from Maon destroyed olive trees in the neighboring village of al-Tuwani.

The trees belong to the al-Rabai family.

Settlers routinely attack Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank with impunity.

Annual figures compiled by Israeli rights group Yesh Din have repeatedly shown that nine out of 10 police investigations about settler crimes fail to lead to a prosecution. more
