Israel launches Gaza ground operation - Gaza death toll now at least 240

JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israel launched a ground operation in Gaza late Thursday on the 10th day of an offensive to stamp out rocket attacks from the Palestinian enclave, the army said.

"Following 10 days of Hamas attacks by land, air and sea, and after repeated rejections of offers to deescalate the situation, the Israel Defense Forces has initiated a ground operation within the Gaza Strip," it said in a statement.

The army said the aim of the operation is to protect Israeli lives and crush Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

"The IDF's objective as defined by the Israeli government is to establish a reality in which Israeli residents can live in safety and security without continued indiscriminate terror, while striking a significant blow to Hamas's terror infrastructure," the statement said. more

Massive artillery barrage as combat helicopters enter northern Gaza

From Ynetnews - The IDF has been shelling areas in the northern Gaza Strip with heavy artillery fire on Thursday night. According to the Palestinians, three people have been killed in the artillery attack, including one child.

The IAF increased its aerial strikes, and attack helicopters were circling the northern Strip. The heavy artillery fire was towards Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia. The IDF also fired numerous flares to light up the night sky over the Strip. The Israel Navy also fired several shells from the sea.

Residents living near the Gaza border have been instructed to enter bomb shelters and safe room.

Loud explosions were heard along the Gaza border. Israelis living in the area near the border said they noticed the flying shells, and that the army fire was more intense than in previous days. more

Israeli air force shoots down drone over Ashkelon

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli air force shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle over the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon on Thursday evening, in what is possibly the second Palestinian drone to enter Israeli airspace since hostilities began 10 days ago.

The military said in a statement that the air force "located and successfully intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle which was identified near Ashkelon," adding that they "engaged the vehicle mid-flight with a 'Patriot' surface to air missile."

Although Israel regularly flies drones over the Gaza Strip -- both during war and peace time -- Palestinian groups have rarely used drones against Israel.

On July 14, Israeli forces shot down a Hamas drone over Ashdod, about halfway between Gaza and southern Tel Aviv. more

4 killed, including 3 children, in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Four Palestinians including three children from the same family were killed and seven injured in renewed Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed in ten days of hostilities to 233 and 1,700 injured.

The airstrikes came immediately after a temporary five-hour humanitarian ceasefire between Hamas and Israel ended, and as Palestinian militants fired rockets across southern Israel.

Three children were killed in a strike on the house of the Shuhaibar family in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, in an attack that also injured three other members of the family.

The three dead children were identified as Fulla Tariq Shuhaibar, Jihad Issam Shuhaibar, and Wasim Issam Shuhaibar. more

Israel-Gaza ceasefire deal 'reached' says BBC

A comprehensive ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Gaza, an Israeli official has told the BBC.

The ceasefire is due to take effect on Friday at 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT).

Earlier, Palestinian militants fired three mortars from Gaza at Israel during a brief humanitarian ceasefire, Israeli security forces say.

Some 227 Palestinians have died in Israeli air strikes since the current crisis began on 8 July. Militant rockets have killed one Israeli.

Israel launched its military operation in Gaza nine days ago with the stated objective of halting Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.

However, the United Nations says most of those killed in Gaza have been civilians.

Israel accuses Hamas of hiding its military infrastructure within the civilian population. more

El-Wafa hospital threatened with bombing by Israeli military

From the International Solidarity Movement - Yesterday evening (July 15th) at approximately 23:05 el-Wafa Rehabilitation hospital in Gaza, near Gaza City, received a call from someone claiming to be from the “Defense department of the Israeli forces”. The caller informed the hospital to evacuate everyone by this morning, and then hung up.

At 23:10, a recorded message was left on the hospital’s answer phone stating that the downtown area of the Shajaia neighbourhood should also be evacuated by tomorrow morning. The Shajaia area is two kilometers from the hospital and has a population of approximately 100,000 people.

At 23:55, a third call was placed to the hospital from the Israeli military. This caller repeated the evacuation message, stating that it should be carried out by 08:00, “because we don’t want innocent people to get hurt, we care about innocent people, and ask you to leave because we are doing a mass operation in your area.” This message was also written on leaflets dropped on the Beit Hanoun neighbourhood two days ago.

“The patients in the hospital are already in fear. With this new threat, the terror has rocketed sky-high. There is mass confusion.” stated Rina Andolini, UK activist now staying the the hospital along with seven other international volunteers.

The board director of el-Wafa hospital called the World Health Organisation (WHO) who then contacted the Israeli military at 00:15. Israeli forces told the WHO that the hospital do not need to evacuate and will not be bombed as, “it is a hospital so we won’t bomb it”.

However El-Wafa hospital has already been struck by five Israeli missiles on 11th July, and international activists have been maintaining a constant presence ever since. more
