Lance Corporal Joe Glenton has become the first serving British soldier to speak out publicly against the Afghan war. Joe faces court martial and a possible two-year prison term after going on the run rather than return to Afghanistan. Joe says he gradually became aware that justifications for occupying Afghanistan were ringing hollow. "The Afghan people were attacking us, even though our politicians said we were going in to help them. It came as a real shock" "That's when I became aware that there was something seriously wrong with the war," he says. GAZA, ( PIC )-- Hamdi Sha’at, the head of the government committee for the reception of delegations, stated Monday that a number of foreign activists intend to organize intensive solidarity campaigns in different European states against the Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip. In a press release issued by the committee’s information office, Sha’at said that the solidarity campaigns include the opening of photo exhibitions about the Israeli war on Gaza and the organization of symposia, lectures, protests and new anti-siege convoys. The Palestinian official pointed out that a powerful anti-siege movement emerged in Europe, adding that the multinational activists who returned from Gaza work as ambassadors for the distressed Gaza people and carry their sufferings and concerns worldwide. The police repression and persecution of Muslim youths and others following the Gaza demonstrations in January continues. They have now arrested a total of 93 people, with the latest raid taking place yesterday. Bad news from the Cairo Conference Organisers in Egypt. Unfortunately the annual anti-imperialist conference will be cancelled this year. Despite their determined efforts to secure a venue, even to the extent of having reserved a second location and kept it unannounced, state security has managed to sabotage the conference by threatening any venue willing to host it. There will be a fuller public statement shortly on behalf of the organising committee explaining the situation. However, if activists decide that they still would like to travel to Cairo, if they have non-refundable tickets or for other reasons, the Cairo organising committee will be holding a number of coordination meetings for consultation and planning. There may also be other activities depending on the profile/interests of those who will be coming. This is obviously a serious set-back for those organising in Cairo.
