Parliament Square has been blocked by Tamil protesters urging the UK government to put some muscle behind calls for an immediate ceasefire by implementing sanctions on the Sri Lankan regime.
Reports say 100,000 civilians are trapped in an area no bigger than 20 sq km and now the Sri Lankan government is giving rebel fighters 24 hours to surrender, threatening in the process to kill thousands more civilians.
Hunger striker Parameswaran Subramaniyan has been surrounded by demonstrators to protect him from police attempts to remove him from Parliament Square.
