One Israeli killed as rockets hit Ashkelon while Egypt tries to broker ceasefire

One Israeli man died on Saturday from shrapnel wounds following rocket fire on Ashkelon by Palestinian fighters. Egypt is reported to be trying to organise a ceasefire as panic spread in southern Israel. So far nine Palestinians have been killed by Israel.
Egyptian officials said on Sunday that efforts were still being made to persuade Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip to hold their fire on Israel, after more than two dozen rockets and mortars were launched over the course of the weekend.

The officials denied earlier reports that their efforts to secure an overnight cease-fire had failed. At least 11 rockets were fired at Israel overnight, in addition to the 20 launched on Saturday toward the southern cities of Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gan Yavne, and around Be'er Sheva. more
