PFLP leader Ahmad Sa'adat suspends hunger strike for three days

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine has suspended his hunger strike for three days amid consultations with leaders of the campaign.

Ahmad Saadat was informed of the decision in his prison hospital in Ramle jail, an Addameer society attorney said.

The attorney met with Saadat in Ramle along with a doctor from the International Committee of the Red Cross, who visited the hospital and described the PFLP leader's condition as stable.

Fares Qaddura, head of the Palestinian prisoners society, had said Tuesday that Saadat lost 10 kilos as his hunger strike entered its 23rd day. Prisoners started their strike on Sept. 27 to protest ill treatment.

Prisoners in Israel’s Ohalei Kedar jail, meanwhile, have agreed to suspend their hunger strike for three days after Israel stopped using isolation as a policy, representatives of the detainees said Tuesday. more

Egyptians continue to keep Gaza's only exit closed

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) – The Gaza Strip’s only exit to the outside world, the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the enclave, was shut down for the second consecutive day on Saturday. Sources at the terminal confirmed to Ma’an that the crossing point was still closed. On Friday, Palestinian official Mahir Abu Sabha said that Egyptian officials at the site informed the Palestinian side it would remain closed until further notice. more

On 16 June, 35 Palestinian workers at Salit Quarries in Mishor Adumim (in area C, east of Jerusalem, in the Occupied West Bank) began a strike. The workers, organized with the independent union WAC-Ma'an, are demanding an end to exploitation and humiliation, and insist on signing a first collective agreement.
