Gaza asks Turkey for assistance in rebuilding some of 34 mosques destroyed in last Israeli war

The administration of Gaza City has requested assistance from Turkey in the construction of several mosques needed after many were destroyed or severely damaged in the 2008-2009 Gaza War, the Anatolia news agency reported Monday.

According to a report released by government officials in Gaza, Anatolia noted, there is an urgent need for mosques in the city due to rapid population growth and the fact that most mosques were damaged during the Gaza War, which broke down the infrastructure of the coastal city.

During the war, 34 mosques were destroyed. Another 161 were damaged and need to be renovated. The cost of such renovation projects have pushed officials in Gaza to seek outside assistance. more

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli warships opened fire at fishermen off the coast of Gaza City early Wednesday, a fisherman said. A fisherman told Ma'an Israeli ships fired gunshots at Palestinian fishing boats, and that a shell hit the water near the boats. No injuries were reported. An Israeli army spokeswoman said that "warning shots were fired in the air," without providing further details. Palestinian fishermen are only allowed to venture three nautical miles from Gaza's shore, though official Israeli-Palestinian agreements previously settled on 20 nautical miles. more

On 16 June, 35 Palestinian workers at Salit Quarries in Mishor Adumim (in area C, east of Jerusalem, in the Occupied West Bank) began a strike.
